PROJECT: Addis Ababa International Airport
1999-2003
In 1999 the Airport embarked on a major expansion programme including a second parallel runway, new terminal building, new air traffic control tower and other ancilliary facilities. The development saw an increase in capacity from 0.5 million passengers per annum (mppa) to 6.5mppa. The vision of the airport is to become a significant hub airport for the African continent.
Terminal 2 is a landmark building constructed predominantly of steel and glass. The building houses passenger processing facilities as well as car parking, shopping and restaurants. The Terminal area is 46,000m2 and is constructed over three double height storeys.The passenger throughput rate was designed to be 1870/hr with the capability to be increased to 3000/hr in the future. The terminal has 7 gates for international flights.
Services provided for this project include structural design, construction supervision and quality control throughout the construction of the building.
